A Pedagogical Response to Plagiarism
By Meg Gorzycki, Ed.D.
The Role of Teacher
A traditional way of responding to cheating and plagiarism approaches the matter from a disciplinary perspective whereby rules are communicated to students and those who break them are penalized. An alternative approach recognizes that students cheat and plagiarize for a variety of reasons and as such, challenges instructors to approach the phenomenon as a matter to be addressed not only by enforcing rules, but by instructional strategies. By way of integrating key elements into the curriculum, instructors can help students move beyond cheating and plagiarism as strategies for learning, and to form scholarly habits that are routinely rehearsed in regular course activities.
